Field Trip Moments Become Learning Experiences

At Arborland, we believe every field trip should have a purpose. We intentionally choose experiences that extend our students’ learning beyond the classroom and provide opportunities for meaningful, hands-on exploration. As our students board the bus, sometimes for the first time, they are filled with excitement and eager to get to our destination. 

Pretend City was the perfect destination for our 3–6-year-olds, where child-sized interactive exhibits allowed them to experience how a community works through imaginative, real-world play. Through child-sized interactive exhibits and activities, the students immersed themselves in practical life experiences, one of the foundational pillars of our curriculum. 

What began as a fun day of exploration quickly became an authentic lesson in community service. Pretend City and Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County partnered to offer "Little Hands, Big Impact," a volunteer program where children packaged fruit for families in need across the community. This program gave our children the chance to see that they can make a real difference in their community and help others, no matter how young they are. With the help of our wonderful chaperones and museum staff, each child played a small but important role as they carefully completed the task together.

This field trip reflected the Montessori philosophy, giving children the opportunity to practice independence, responsibility, collaboration, and service in a real-world setting, with a meaningful surprise along the way.
